For Don Sleet's first and only recording session as a leader, producer Orrin Keepnews handed the trumpeter an ideal rhythm section. Pianist Wynton Kelly and drummer Jimmy Cobb were members of Miles Davis's quintet. Bassist Ron Carter would be hired by Davis before many months had gone by. As a bonus, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath was Sleet's front-line partner. Influenced by Davis and Kenny Dorham, Sleet brought to his high-level encounter technical command and sleek tone acquired in formal training and his experience in jazz groups and the San Diego Symphony. Sleet's chance-taking interval leaps on "Secret Love" and his headlong swing on the blues "Fast Company" showed that he was ready to be in this fast company. Nonetheless, his later career had no high points like this one. Sleet died in 1986 at 47.
