Charles Brown has cornered the market on smoky, subtle, jazz-inflected blues since the early days of R&B. This 1990 album finds him in the company of Dr. John (who sings a duet with Charles on 'Virus Called the Blues') and Ruth Brown (who sings on the uptempo 'Tell Me Who.') Charles' rich baritone and after-hours piano are backed by a band stacked with jazz veterans--among them bassist Earl May (who recorded with Coltrane), reedman Clifford Solomon (musical director and longtime member of Ray Charles' band), and drummer Keith Copeland (who's worked with just about everyone in New York over the past decade). Legendary R&B producer Jerry Wexler contributed liner notes.
