Hampton Hawes became a professional musician in 1944, when he was 16. Twelve years later he had developed into one of the most brilliant jazz pianists of the post-war period. In late 1956, having recorded three acclaimed trio albums for Contemporary, Hawes added the 25-year-old guitarist Jim Hall for a long night and morning of recording in the spirit of an organized jam session. So pronounced was the empathy among Hawes, Hall, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Bruz Freeman, so intense the swing and good feeling, that virtually everything they recorded was released, in three volumes. This is the second, made up of four of the best standards ever written and three classic compositions by Dizzy Gillespie.

with Jim Hall, Red Mitchell, Bruz Freeman
