Cal Tjader had a simple formula for maintaining his standing at the head of the Latin jazz pack. He simply hired the most knowledgeable Afro-Cuban percussionists, and the most flexible jazz rhythm sections, then frequently added extra spice to the mix with a flute or tenor sax soloist of equal quality. The two albums combined here provide a survey of Tjader’s bands, 1956-1959, with such respected names as Willie Bobo, Vince Guaraldi, Paul Horn, Al McKibbon, Mongo Santamaria, Eugene Wright, and the great Cuban saxophonist José “Chombo” Silva all supporting the leader’s innovative approach to both his instrument and the genre.
