Guitarist Joe Pass was not the first to underscore Fred Astaire’s affinity for jazz--Astaire himself had recorded with jazz musicians in the Fifties--but Pass may have been the ideal interpreter of an all-Astaire jazz recital. The guitarist and the hoofer shared virtuosity as effortless as it was complete, impeccable taste and timing, a nonchalance that could not disguise deep passion, and the inspiration to be both ideal partners and nonpareil solo performers. In a program of standards that Astaire introduced in his classic films plus two original blues (one a bonus track), Pass rises to the challenge and makes the music dance.
