Producer Richard Bock borrowed the title and cover design of this album from the first 12-inch LP he issued on his Pacific Jazz label. That set captured two Gerry Mulligan groups at the peak of West Coast jazz’s popularity in 1954. This one features two of the movement’s stalwarts over 30 years later, after Bud Shank had relocated to Port Townsend, Washington and as Shorty Rogers was returning to playing after 15 years of composing for soundtracks. Keyed by an exciting rhythm section, Shank and Rogers have a grand reunion, nodding to Basie, Ellington, and Parker in a program that also features three Rogers originals. Blowing flugelhorn, which he had introduced to modern jazz, Rogers had lost nothing of his concise and often humorous conception, while Shank had moved with the times and sounds anything but “cool.”

with George Cables, Monty Budwig, Sherman Ferguson
