This is the sixth & final album in a marvelous series of performances by the legendary Erroll Garner on Telarc Archive. It showcases Garner in Campus Concert at Purdue University in 1964, and the Feeling is Believing album from the '70s.
From Campus Concert come eight tunes recorded live at Purdue, where Garner mesmerized 6,000 students packed into Purdue’s Music Hall and showcased his extraordinary warmth and energy on-stage. The special brand of rapport between performer and spectator Garner brought to his performances is evident throughout the album.
The program runs through some very non-standard performances of standards including “Indiana,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Stardust,” “These Foolish Things” as well as the memorable original, “Mambo Erroll.”
Feeling Is Believing was Garner’s first album release of the ‘70s. For this album, Garber assembled a distinguished group of musicians, augmenting his regular accompaniment and giving the album a fresh background texture. His interpretations of contemporary pop tunes of the time are complemented by five originals, including the title track. Garner’s performances are completely improvised and always express the inner man without inhibitions.
“I always play what I feel,” Garner said. “I always feel like me, but I’m a new me every day.”
