The music on this album consists of traditional American folk tunes, all of which have been performed as either instrumental solos or as accompaniment to the stories in Banjo Dancing and On the Way Home, shows, written and directed by Stephen Wade. These are one-man, two-act theatrical pieces consisting of stories, songs, clog-dancing and music. Opening in Chicago in May 1979, Banjo Dancing became one of the five longest-running shows in the United States. Performed continuously until May 1989, it was succeeded by On the Way Home, which opened in Washington DC just a few weeks later. Unifying the narratives in both performances is the five-string banjo. In both shows there are many tunes attending the stories, some melodies played as fragment, and others in their entirety. Here are a few of those tunes. Joining Wade is Gil Carter, Jamaican rhumba box, washboard, kalimba, The Red Clay Ramblers' Mike Craver, piano, harmonium; Zan McLoed, guitar, bouzouki; Sam Morgan, fiddle, mandolin, and Kieran O'Hare, uillean pipes, tin whistle, wooden flute.
