Throughout his career, Charles Mingus displayed a passion for words as well as music. A distinctive prose stylist and frequent lyricist, he often gave verbal expression to the themes of love, hate, life, and death that suffused his compositions. The three sessions in this program, among the first recorded for his Debut label, place the emphasis on vocals by Jackie Paris and Bob Benton (singing Mingus originals) and the Gordon family, featuring the teenage Honey Gordon (see OJCCD-1783-2) singing tunes by her father George. There are also substantial instrumental contributions from such giants as Hank Jones, Lee Konitz, Debut co-owner Max Roach, and Mingus himself, not to mention such pivotal works as “Portrait” and “Extrasensory Perception.”

with Lee Konitz, Phyllis Pinkerton, George Koutzen, Al Levitt, Paige Brook, John Mehegan, Jackson Wiley, Max Roach, Hank Jones
