Blues singer, guitarist, and kazoo blower Hudson Whittaker (1903-1981), known professionally as Tampa Red, made a long, profitable career out of purveying jive and hokum, including such risqué classics as “It’s Tight Like That,” “The Duck’s Yas Yas Yas,” and “Let Me Play with Your Poodle.” Yet Don’t Jive Me, one of two albums cut in 1960 during what would be his last session, is aptly titled, as it showcases a more serious, introspective side of the prolific entertainer. Highlights include a version of red’s now-standard “Don’t You Lie to Me” and a wonderfully inventive reworking of “Georgia on My Mind.” But in “Jelly Whippin’ Blues,” the veteran couldn't resist a touch of his famous gift for double entendre.
Recorded in 1960.
