Much of the success of Dave Brubeck's career is founded on his original compositions or, in the case of "Take Five," one by Paul Desmond. Early on, though, in his trio and the early quartet, Dave's signature style was already very much in evidence in his interpretations of the works of songwriters of the classic period. Some of the innovative arrangements and performances that made him a household name were created on frameworks provided by Carmichael, Rodgers, Arlen, Kern, and other masters of the great American songbook. In seven recordings of standards by the trio and the classic quartet of his Fantasy Records period, and four by Brubeck in his Concord and Telarc years, we hear the adventure and swing that have made Dave Brubeck a perennial favorite.
