Jaki Byard, Richard Davis, and Alan Dawson comprised a formidable trio. They collaborated so often in the 1960s and achieved such cohesiveness and familiarity that musical barriers dissolved in their collective virtuosity. Freedom Together! is precisely what they had. It is evident not only in the title track of this album but throughout the collection. Byard is best known as a pianist of vast technique and creativity, but he is likely to leave the keyboard and play any of a number of other instruments. Here, we are treated to his tenor saxophone work inspired by Lester Young, and to excursions on drums and vibraharp. The trio plays four Byard compositions and four standards, with "Young at Heart" a closing spoof. Vocalist Junior Parker is featured on "Getting to Know You."
