Belgian guitarist René Thomas (1927-1975) was in the midst of a five-year residency in Montreal when he cut this album, the sole American session to feature him as leader. It verifies Sonny Rollins’s comment at the time that Thomas was as inventive as any of his U.S. guitar contemporaries. The former protégé of countryman Django Reinhardt, whose mature style also reflected the later innovations of Jimmy Raney, delivers a model hard-bop program here, with critical assistance from the similarly underrated J.R. Monterose, who contributed three originals as well as several gritty tenor sax solos.
