Franz Joseph Haydn arranged many Scottish songs in the years following his 1791 visit to Great Britain. While the intent of the publishers was to arrange these songs into 'classical chamber music,' Haydn's arrangements retain the simplicity and directness of traditional music. Although some of the published arrangements featured Anglicized versions of the old Scots texts, on this 1983 Philo release, Jean Redpath sings the old Scots text whenever possible. The instrumental arrangements are for violin, piano or harpsichord, and cello.
