While there’s a plethora of young male jazz singers making their mark these days, there is only a handful of originals who have found their voices and can sing with sophistication, hipness and depth of emotion. One of the top-of-the-class jazz vocalists of the day is Curtis Stigers—a rarity among singers in that he’s also a fine saxophonist—who not only knows the jazz songbook but is also stretching beyond standard fare to embrace, and then make his own, songs from his generation. On I Think It’s Going to Rain Today, Stigers ups the ante by singing tunes by an array of today’s best songwriters, including Randy Newman (the title track), Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Sting and Mose Allison. He also contributes two of his own songs to the mix—both balladic beauties. The skies may be cloudy and there may be nasty weather in the forecast, but I Think It’s Going to Rain Today shines, in its embrace of the melancholy and the overflowing of human kindness that Stigers expresses.
