In the past, Susannah’s albums have either been devoted to a single composer’s work or to songs so rare that most of her listeners were hearing them for the first time. On her third album for Concord Records she decided to departure from that. Here she takes familiar songs by a variety of writers and makes the songs her own. The theme of the album is romance and no one can sing of love as hauntingly as Susannah McCorkle.

The arrangements were done in the same informal manner that made Billie Holiday’s 1930’s side so appealing and Susannah loves the collaboration part of the process. For this album she worked on the music with Ben Aronov, Keith Ingham, Lee Musiker and guitarist Howard Alden. “I talk and give my ideas,” she says, “but I also listen a lot to what they have to say, so it’s a real collaboration. It’s one of the things I love most about being a singer, because it’s so creative. Howard was the real linchpin of this album, and I love his playing, because that rhythm guitar foundation we all know from the old swing groups in so important, so inspiring.”

This album was recorded in New York, NY, on September 15-17, 1991.
