Matthew Gee (1925-1979), who never became an all-star like several of the players who accompany him on this album, enjoyed a varied career under the leadership of many jazz greats, including Duke Ellington. While clearly a modern stylist, he also displayed the power and elan of more classic trombonists, which he enhanced with vocal exclamations between phrases in the manner of one of his former bosses, Gene Ammons. The two groups he led for this 1956 recording feature such eloquent presences from the period as Kenny Dorham, Frank Foster, Wilbur Ware, and Arthur Taylor; and the quintet titles with Ernie Henry are notable for their uncommon trombone/alto sax front line and several fluent arranging touches.
