Mastery of time is one of the most admired qualities in jazz. In the 1950s and ’60s, no one exemplified that mastery more than Leroy Vinnegar, the bassist from Indianapolis who was a mainstay of jazz on the West Coast. Vinnegar’s walking bass was a metric and harmonic force in dozens of recordings by Shelly Manne, Benny Carter, Stan Getz, Shorty Rogers, Chet Baker, and Teddy Edwards, among many others. In this successor to his popular Leroy Walks! (OJC-160), Vinnegar walks an estimable quintet through a swinging program. His longtime collaborator, Edwards, accompanies Leroy on his stroll, along with trumpeter Freddy Hill, his drummers Milt Turner and Ron Jefferson, vibraharpist Roy Ayers, and pianist Mike Melvoin and Victor Feldman. Feldman doubles on vibes.
