In the 1950s, the Lighthouse at Laguna Beach was a major center of jazz activity on the West Coast. The roster of the Lighthouse All-Stars varied from time to time, but it always included some of the brightest young players who had settled or grown up in Southern California. On the occasion of this 1955 concert, the All-Stars' horn section was Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, and Frank Rosolino, with Claude Williamson and Stan Levey on piano and drums and leader Howard Rumsey playing bass. Guitarist Barney Kessel is an honored guest, featured on a brilliant version of "'Round Midnight," and there are two high-powered blues performances by pianist Hampton Hawes with Red Mitchell on bass and the propulsive drumming of Shelly Manne.
