Critics and fans who were crazy about Magic Dick and Jay Geils' Rounder debut are going to be downright ecstatic over the release of Little Car Blues. The vibe here is that of vintage blues and jazz -- the kind of swinging music that Jay McShann and Louis Armstrong were laying down pre-W.W.II in Chicago and Kansas City. The Chicago Chess era is represented here as well with tunes by Willie Dixon, Little Walter Jacobs, and Jimmy Rogers. Their choice of Marvin Gaye's 'Stubborn Kind of Fellow' is a showcase for the genius of Bluestime and their ability to re-interpret songs. Magic Dick's passionate vocals and patented harmonica wizardry and Jay Geils' swinging, stinging guitar are deftly complemented by the musical expertise of the Bluestime band: Jerry Miller handles the rhythm guitar and mandolin duties with cool assurance, bassist Michael 'Mudcat' Ward is a master of the groove, and drummer Steve Ramsay piles on the coal that keeps the engine chugging.
