Dave Frishberg the busy jazz pianist began writing songs in the 1960s, when his work accompanying singers made him realize that songs were more than sets of chord changes for improvisation; and he has been writing (and performing) his unique creations to growing acclaim ever since. While he is best known for the witty, often rueful truth of his lyrics, he is also an inspired melodist who affirms his own credo that "in a good song, it's the music that makes the lyrics work." This album, his first live recording, offers telling examples in the tunes and tangents of such Frishberg classics as "One Horse Town" and "The Dear Departed Past," which also illustrate his knack for crafting scenarios filled with telling revelations about their narrators. The inimitable Frishberg voice and his well-honed piano (on extended display during this collection's Johnny Hodges medley) are also key ingredients in this most singular and incisive one-man package.
