What was to be a solo recital by Joe Pass turned into an exciting trio concert when he added his good friends Toots Thielemans and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. The occasion was the 1980 Northsea Jazz Festival, an event that never fails to attract Europe's hippest audiences. (They listen knowledgeably and applaud in time.) Responding to the stimulation of the crowd and one another, the three virtuosos gave their all on three jazz classics and two standard songs that are staples of the jazz repertoire. In addition to his celebrated harmonica, Thielemans brought his guitar for a tribute to Duke Ellington. He also displayed his whistling chops on a Charlie Parker tune. A highlight of the program is Thielemans's brief, abstract introduction to "Autumn Leaves," which is followed by his and Pass's empathetic simultaneous improvisation.
