Ray Brown and Milt Jackson had been musical colleagues since 1946, when they first played together as members of Dizzy Gillespie’s innovative big band. In 1951 Brown was the bassist in the Milt Jackson Quartet, which evolved into the Modern Jazz Quartet. Their periodic small-group collaborations for recordings, club dates, and concerts have been among the hardest swinging encounters in all of jazz. In this 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival concert, Jackson and Brown were joined by pianist Monty Alexander, the irrepressible trumpeter Clark Terry, tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and drummer Jimmie Smith. The result was a classic jam session.
