This is the earlier of two albums trumpeter “Kid” Thomas Valentine recorded for Riverside’s 1961 series featuring surviving New Orleans masters (the other, with Albert Burbank in the clarinet chair, is on OJCCD-1833-2). Featured on clarinet here is Emile Barnes, who together with the leader formed the longest-standing trumpet-clarinet tandem in the Crescent City. Their raw, soulful sounds and hand-in-glove phrasing grace a program filled with classic traditional material and pop hits from early in the century, as well as two spontaneous vocal blues by Kid Thomas and bassist Joseph Butler.
