Stephan Smith's debut album, Now's the Time, is the first folk record to break into the pop/mainstream consciousness of its generation. This young Virginian -- first touted by Pete Seeger, and compared to Woody Guthrie by The New York Times -- writes popular songs that are genre breaking; not only has he grabbed the ears of his folk contemporaries, but also those of the hip-hop, R&B, and country audiences who are singing his songs. 'All Together Now' (with lyrics that reach '. . .from Harlem to the Heartland. . . . ') is a rap song, set against a rolling, all-American guitar; 'Hopelessly and Endlessly in Love' is a searing a cappella love song; 'I Need to Know' is a topical song about the media, truth and our society, and 'Peace on Earth,' a song of universal appeal, is set to the sounds of madrigal guitar. All tracks on Now's the Time were recorded live. The album was produced by Steve Rosenthal.
