Famous in the Fifties for his biting, Charlie Parker-inspired alto saxophone work with such giants as Clifford Brown and Thelonious Monk, as well as for "Nica's Tempo" and other original compositions, Gigi Gryce (1927-1983) recorded three albums for the New Jazz label in 1960 with a wonderfully cohesive combo that included trumpeter Richard Williams, pianist Richard Wyands, and drummer Mickey Roker. Rounding out the personnel for this, the first in the trio of discs, was bassist Reggie Workman. All five musicians had much to say on this set of six hard-bopping Gryce blues arrangements, especially the underheralded Williams, whom Down Beat reviewer John S. Wilson described as projecting "a sense of agitated urgency."
