There have been important husband-and-wife teams throughout jazz history: the McPartlands, Akiyoshi/Tabackin, Airto and Flora, and Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott. Given the diverse recording affiliations of the last pair, they were documented extensively by Prestige, Blue Note, and Impulse during the years of their union. This collection, which includes two of their strongest sessions, has soul to spare, as the title indicates. It also illustrates how the personal voicings Scott employs on the Hammond B-3 and her wide taste in material set her apart as an organist, and made her bands (particularly when the magisterial Turrentine was on board) the most tasteful organ combos around.
