Spirit of the Horn by world-famous trombonist Slide Hampton and The World of Trombones. This recording is the band’s first in over twenty years, and surprisingly, marks the first time Mr. Hampton and GRAMMY Award nominated trombonist Bill Watrous have ever recorded together. Spirit of the Horn (MCGJ 1011) is due at retail stores on February 25, 2003.
Captured in state-of-the-art audio and video formats at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, Spirit of the Horn reflects the state of the trombone today, highlighting incomparable new arrangements that explore the complete range and sonic pallet of the horn. The unique ensemble, comprised of twelve trombones and a full rhythm section, merges the skills of veteran musicians with some of the younger, up-and-coming future masters.
This album also serves as a tribute to those artists who have been great influences on Mr. Hampton as well as other members of the ensemble. The six-song “Tribute Suite” is an expression of Mr. Hampton’s work as a formidable champion of the jazz tradition, and the album spans classic standards like “Basin Street Blues,” to contemporary pieces like Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance.” Spirit of the Horn represents these musicians’ commitment to the music and passion for the trombone.
MCG Jazz is a division of Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, a non-profit arts and learning center in Pittsburgh. This multi-discipline, minority-directed center provides hope and life skills to youth and adults in urban environments through jazz, visual arts, vocational training, and business partnerships. Spirit Of The Horn epitomizes these values with all of the proceeds from the sale of this album going to support the MCG Jazz program. MCG Jazz, a specialty-recording label, captures the magic of many of the jazz artists who perform at the center every year.
