“Straight Ahead” is a straight-ahead description of the music of Lockjaw Davis, and this 1976 session with the Tommy Flanagan trio is one of the finest expressions of Jaws’s mastery of the art of the effective combination and placement of controlled explosions. In the tradition of great swing tenormen--Hawkins, Byas, Berry, Webster--Davis also embodied the spirit of bebop and from the early days of the movement was accepted as one of its soul mates. There is delicious contrast here between Davis’s swagger and the imperturbable but equally swinging soloing of the elegant Flanagan.
