Rance Allen revolutionized gospel music during the 1970s with "message" songs that fearlessly negotiated a narrow bridge between the spiritual and secular realms and, in the process, set the stage for such urban contemporary gospel stars as the Winans brothers and BeBe and CeCe Winans. An astonishing vocal pyrotechnician, the Monroe, Michigan multi-instrumentalist penetrated the r&b charts several times during that decade. This collection features Allen's four biggest hits--"I Got to Be Myself," "Ain't No Need of Crying," "I Belong to You," and "Smile"--along with such other classics as his reinventions of hits by the Temptations and Archie Bell and the Drells and his tour de force reading of Rev. James Cleveland's "That Will Be Good Enough for Me."
