Quadrant was the name under which Joe Pass, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, and Mickey Roker, star players of the Pablo repertory company, recorded in the early 1980s. The repertoire under consideration in this 1980 collection is that of Edward Kennedy Ellington, and our heroes explore an interesting cross-section of Duke’s better known pieces. From the we-mean-business introduction of “Caravan” to the final funky bass notes of “Rocks in My Bed,” it is a most effective tribute. Among the highlights are Pass’s evocation behind Jackson’s solo of the famous saxophone section riff in “All Too Soon,” the lunging swing of “I’m Beginning to See the Light” and the Latinized version of “In My Solitude.”
