Back in the heyday of West Coast jazz, alto saxophonist Lennie Niehaus (best known recently as musical director of the film Bird) led several limber studio bands for Contemporary Records. The present octet, tight yet relaxed in its overall feel, works in the style then popularized by Shorty Rogers and Gerry Mulligan. Besides the leader’s fluent horn, this 1955 session allows us to hear such reliable but unheralded players as Stu Williamson and Bob Enevoldsen, plus the always-strong groove of a Shelly Manne-based rhythm section.
