In the mid-Fifties, Kenny Drew was one of the most promising and in-demand young pianists on the bustling New York jazz scene. But, like more than a few of his contemporaries, he found it hard to survive–both economically and creatively–and left to take up what turned out to be permanent residence in Sweden. Over the years he became a highly-regarded artist throughout Europe and in Japan, but his Riverside albums remain the main body of his American work. This Is New, which featured two up-and-coming young horn players of the period. Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley, was Drew's only larger than trio effort for the label.
