The promise of two new jazz voices suffuses Tuba Sounds. The session was the first issued under the name of Ray Draper (1940-1982), who was a 16-year-old New York City high school student when he recorded these precocious examples of hard-bop tuba, and the first recording of trumpeter Webster Young, who had recently left Washington, D.C. for New York along with drummer Ben Dixon. The leader's supple execution and keen harmonic ear are well displayed on "House of Davis" and his own "Jackie's Dolly," one of two Draper originals; while Young's heartfelt homage to Billie Holiday on "You're My Thrill" presages his own full-blown tribute album For Lady (OJCCD-1716-2). This is also the rarest date of the many that Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron recorded together during their years as Prestige contract players, and they help sustain the comfortable and often conversational atmosphere with their usual bold playing.

with Webster Young, Jackie McLean, Mal Waldron, Spanky Debrest, Ben Dixon
