Guiseppe Verdi inherited from Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti the tradition of glorious vocal melody, and added to it a sense of drama that has never been excelled. Though he evolved a style of enormous subtlety and expressive range across his 28 operas, the element that binds his entire creative output together is his almost peerless ability to write soaring, memorable melodies.
