Wailin' tenor sax daddy Johnny Nocturne, a/k/a John Firmin, worked with the David Bromberg Band in the '70s; in the '80s he moved to the San Francisco area and helped pianist Mitch Woods form the Rocket 88's. Now he's moving out on his own with this four-horns-plus-rhythm combo, a band that nails the party spirit of the great jump combos of the late '40s and early '50s--think of Roy Milton or Louis Jordan. With soulful vocals from Brenda Boykin, Firmin's ultra-direct, wailing tenor, and a fat, fat horn section anchored by bari player Danny Bittkar, it sounds like party time in San Francisco.
