The Woodshed All-Stars of 1995 might well be the most versatile old-time stringband on the circuit. The band is, of course, adept at the north Georgia-styled twin-fiddle and banjo breakdowns that Mac Benford fans have come to expect. The group also shines on songs from such early country stalwarts as the Carter Family, Kelly Harrell and the Delmore Brothers. What is perhaps most surprising, though, is the band's more contemporary approach to Marie Burns' original songs, an evocative and atmospheric sound that might aptly be called nouveau old-time music. Willow, the band's Rounder debut, does an outstanding job of showcasing the diverse talents of this quintet. Old Time Music for a modern time. --from the liner notes by Jon Hartley Fox
