Lem Winchester gave up his career as a policeman to devote himself full-time to the music he loved, then died in a shooting accident. He was not a talented amateur trying to make it into the pros, but one of the most gifted players of an instrument dominated in modern jazz by Milt Jackson. He was well on his way to making it clear that he had his own voice as a vibraharpist. This album, made three months before his death, is powerful evidence of his individuality. Touch is the equivalent of tone on a keyboard instrument, and personal touch is the most elusive element for a pianist or vibist to master. Aside from his distinctive harmonic approach and phrasing, Winchester had his own touch, an identifiable sound that permeates this lovely album. He is supported by the all-star rhythm section of Richard Wyands, George Duvivier, and Roy Haynes.
