Curtis Fuller was in the front ranks of the Detroit migration that invigorated the New York jazz scene in the late Fifties, so it was only logical that he draw on the services of several hometown buddies for his second Prestige session--Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes, who had already won acclaim with the groups of Miles Davis and Horace Silver, respectively, and Sylvester "Sonny Red" Kyner, who played a major role on Fuller's first album (OJCCD-077-2). The ringer was pianist Red Garland, Chambers's partner in the Miles Davis quintet and a nonpareil of modern combo piano. The band set a predictably affirmative groove on a session highlighted by spirited blowing on the saxophonist's blues "Slenderella," ballad features for each horn, and the attractive Fuller original "Cashmere."
