At a time when Aretha Franklin was moving further and further from her gospel roots, West Memphis, Arkansas-born, East St. Louis, Illinois–bred vocalist Shirley Brown stepped in to fill the void with the soap opera-like opus "Woman to Woman," which critic Ron Wynn has described as "a seminal confessional and confrontational soul masterpiece." Released in August 1974 on the Truth label, a subsidiary of Stax, the tune shot to No. 1 on Billboard's soul chart and spawned at least two answer records. Unfortunately, it proved to be the last major hit for the financially troubled Memphis company. Woman to Woman also includes such other emotion-searing Brown performances as "It Ain't No Fun" and "I've Got to Go on Without You."
