The Johnson Mountain Boys have made an indelible mark on bluegrass music, and their place in the history of this music is assured. They burst upon the scene at a time when 'newgrass' and 'suburban grass' had become so successful for so long that soulful, straight-ahead traditional bluegrass had been all but written off as a worthwhile endeavor for any but the first generation masters like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. The Johnson Mountain Boys changed all that with a string of wonderful emotive straight grass albums and years of hard touring, making it respectable once again to embrace the verities of hard-core bluegrass.
