Recorded and released 1955:

• From the original liner notes: Sonny Rollins has emerged from his ‘woodshed’ in Chicago a vibrant and more complete musician with promise of still more to come. These recordings, made shortly after he came East as a member of the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group, are stimulating as no intoxicant or spirit, but only music can be. Max Roach is fantastic and masterful, as he is everywhere at once but never in the way. This is not “pop” jazz, made palatable for people with weak viscera or none at all. This is jazz, Jim! It runs deep emotionally. It gets down to hard swinging without sacrificing thinking.” (Ira Gitler)

• Personnel: Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophone; Ray Bryant, piano; George Morrow, bass; Max Roach, drums

• Featured tracks: “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Paradox,” “Raincheck,” “There Are Such Things,” “It’s All Right With Me”

In the 11th edition of the Concord Music Group’s remastered CDs originally issued by Prestige Records in the ‘50s and ‘60s, three more classics that engineer Rudy Van Gelder recorded and recently digitally upgraded. All three were recorded in the ‘50s and feature the crème de la crème of the jazz world—titans now; young upstarts then finding their voices. Each album includes original and new liner notes. The titles for this latest batch include albums made by perennial favorites:

Miles Davis: Collectors’ Items

Sonny Rollins: Worktime

John Coltrane: Standard Coltrane
