Sylvia Syms
Throughout her career, Sylvia Syms (1924-1992) was considered a singer's singer. She was a mainstay of the supper-club circuit and sustained a second career in musical comedies. Her roots, however, were in jazz, particularly the heady sounds she heard while hanging out on 52nd Street as a teenager and meeting such friends as Billie Holiday (she bought Lady Day her first gardenia), Benny Carter, and Art Tatum.
