VOICES Notes and news on Collector's Corner releases

Playing For Change features talented street musicians from around the world. The group's inspirational video for "Stand By Me" became a YouTube sensation, spawning an album and live tour. Now, Concord Music Group and Playing For Change Records has released a special duo CD/DVD, Playing For Change Live, on which the group is joined by artists Ziggy Marley, Keb' Mo' and Toots Hibbert of Toots And The Maytals.
The project's title has double meaning -- the original musicians "playing for change" and the subsequent organization that arranged the worldwide tour to promote peace and raise funds for musicians, schools and art programs in needy communities.
The CD set begins with Keb' Mo' alternating harmonica and vocal on a bluesy "Fannie Mae." Ziggy Marley sings "Love Is My Religion" with a joy that evokes memories of his father as much as his strikingly similar vocal quality does. Toots Hibbert moves outside of his ska and reggae roots with Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams To Remember."
The DVD documents the Playing For Change's 2009 world tour with stops in Scotland, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Madrid. (The group has a handful of dates around the world through this summer and fall, so see them live if you can.) Along with 14 musical numbers, there's a 90-minute film featuring the musicians who hail from the US, Africa, Europe and Israel.
The music is spirited and uplifting, brimming with positive energy. And with some of the proceeds going to the Playing For Change non-profit foundation, you'll feel as good about purchasing this CD as you will listening to it.
