Lovely Ray

21 DEC 09 ANNE FARNSWORTH

Procrastinating Christmas shoppers take note -- Ray Charles Sings For Lovers, the latest addition to Concord's For Lovers series, has arrived. Whether you're looking to gift Mom, Grandma or your sweetheart, you can't go wrong with the classic sound of Ray Charles.

His signature ballads are here as well as the famous country covers -- Eddy Arnold's "You Don't Know Me" and his own country hit, "I Can't Stop Loving You," from the groundbreaking 1962 release Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music.

Charles put his soulful spin on all genres and Leon Russell's "A Song For You" and The Beatles' "Something" get the patented Ray Charles makeover. "Baby It's Cold Outside," the classic duet with Betty Carter is included, as well as their lesser-known "Every Time We Say Goodbye." Charles mentored Carter long before she became one of the most unique singers in jazz.

It's great to hear his less familiar American Songbook standards as well as his work with the Count Basie Orchestra. Classics like "Stella By Starlight" and "Our Love Is Here To Stay" round out a warm and satisfying set for lovers of the incomparable Ray Charles.
