How Sweet It Is

Please sing along. Ahem... Happy birthday, Dave Brubeck. Happy birthday, Dave Brubeck. Happy birthday, Dave Brubeck. Happy birthday to you! Yes, today is jazz legend Dave Brubeck's 90th birthday and I don't know what you should get him, but if you're looking for a gift idea for anyone else, check out The Definitive Dave Brubeck On Fantasy, Concord Jazz And Telarc. And once you've wowed them with that, snuggle up tonight and watch the premier of the documentary Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way on TCM.

Definitive features tracks spanning Brubeck's long and productive career. (Read Chris Slawecki's recent review.) The first disc of the two-disc set covers mostly his early years and features favorites like "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" and "I Found A New Baby." Disc two picks up later, after Brubeck's sound had developed into the familiar solid style he's known for. It features great cuts like "Koto Song" and, of course, "Take Five."

The documentary In His Own Sweet Way was executive-produced by jazz fan Clint Eastwood and narrated by Alec Baldwin. The film chronicles Brubeck's career, starting from his early years studying music, all the way through to the groundbreaking release of Take Five and beyond. It airs at 5pm EST on Turner Classic Movies. Check your local listings to make sure you don't miss it.
