Alt balladeer Raul Malo recently signed with Fantasy and today the label released an iTunes-only EP titled Hello Again that highlights the former Mavericks frontman's twangy, soulful song stylings.
The 5-track EP features two live cuts -- "Every Little Thing About You" and "I Said I Love You." There's also "In My Dreams," a song from his days in the Grammy-winning Mavericks. The first two tracks, however, really show the spectrum of Malo's sound. The first cut, the single "Hello Again," is a straight-forward love song that calls to mind the rich rock structure of Bruce Springsteen and the sincere voice of Roy Orbison.
The second cut, "So Beautiful," is a demo version and features a simple piano intro with layer multi-tracked vocals that could've easily appeared on a latter-Beatles or Wings album. (Malo even lets us in on the homage by slipping in the Paul McCartney line "In an ever changing world..." from "Live And Let Die.")
The EP comes in advance of Lucky One, his first album of original material in nearly a decade, which comes out this spring. Of all the songs, only "Hello Again" appears on the full-length album as it appears on the EP. Malo tapped producer Steve Berlin, who worked with Los Lobos and Malo on his 2001 release Today. If you can't wait until spring, Malo is currently on tour.
