VOICES Notes and news on Pop & Rock releases
17 JAN 09 DAVID VIENNA
A few years ago, Concord released a collection of Ray Charles duets called Genius Loves Company. Well, it appears Concord loves Ray. Concord Music Group recently entered into an exclusive agreement with the Ray Charles Foundation, which grants the company access to the legendary artist's post-1960 catalog.
The re-issues have already begun with the digital release of The Spirit Of Christmas late last year. Throughout the rest of 2009, six more key catalog albums arrive as well as some digital-only exclusives.
Coming in March, fans can look for a comprehensive retrospective featuring hits such as "Georgia On My Mind," "Hit The Road Jack" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." More releases will follow, including Modern Sounds In Country Western Music, Vol. 1 & 2 (didn't know Ray did country, did ya?) and the Starbucks collection Starbucks Opus Anthology, among others. Along with the re-issues, fans will discover rare photographs and other treats. And some of the re-issues will be available digitally for the first time ever.
Genius Loves Company nabbed eight Grammy awards in 2004 and was followed by 2006's Ray Sings, Basie Swings, a previously unreleased collection of Charles with the Count Basie Orchestra. Keep your eyes and ears ready as the love affair continues this year.
