The Ultimate Love Man
15 JAN 10 DAVID NATHAN
Isaac Hayes built his recording career on providing an aural soundtrack for many a romantic evening, which is why Isaac Hayes Sings For Lovers is a perfect addition to Concord's For Lovers series.
Ike's groundbreaking Hot Buttered Soul album set the stage for a whole raft of lovemaking music created by fellow soul men like Barry White, Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass. Sensual, sometimes erotic, Ike's deep velvet tones provide the perfect backdrop for seduction and the For Lovers release includes a number of prime examples.
His ability to add his own special touch to the music of Burt Bacharach and Hal David is evident with his treatment of "Walk On By" on the aforementioned Hot Buttered Soul. On this new compilation, he brings his interpretive magic to the songwriting duo's "The Look Of Love" and a nine-minute version of "(They Long To Be) Close To You."
"Ain't That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)," penned with longtime songwriting and production partner David Porter, started out as a Johnnie Taylor Stax hit. Hayes puts his indelible stamp on it as he does with pop group Bread's '71 hit "Baby I'm-A Want You." The essence of Hayes' skill as a slow jam master can be found on cuts like "Someone Made You For Me," "Make A Little Love To Me" and the brilliant "Let's Don't Ever Blow Our Thing," from the 1976's Juicy Fruit (Disco Freak), a suitable finale to this sumptuous set of sexy soul music.
