With the recent signing of Zap Mama, Heads Up International adds yet another luminary to its ever expanding Heads Up Africa series. Zap Mama's label debut, Supermoon, is scheduled for release on August 7, 2007. Zap Mama began in 1990 as the five-member, all-female a cappella project fronted by Congo-born, Belgium-bred vocalist Marie Daulne. Adventures in Afropea I, their 1993 debut album on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, climbed to the top slot on Billboard's World Music chart and became the biggest selling non-compilation album in the label's history.
Fourteen years and numerous personnel changes later, Zap Mama and Daulne have become one and the same, and she approaches each new project with various hand-picked guest artists representing an array of styles. An engaging blend of world, jazz, pop, funk, reggae and soul, Supermoon includes guest appearances by stellar figures from around the globe: drummer Tony Allen; bassist Meshell Ndegeocello and Will Lee; guitarists David Gilmore and Michael Franti; pianists Leon Pendarvis and Robbie Kondor, percussionist Bashiri Johnson and many more.
